Disability, Diversity and Democracy – From One Child at a Time to Directions in Educational Policy

Inclusion has taken root in education for many reasons: it helps us understand and support diverse learners; it helps create more diverse educational communities; it promotes teacher development.

In this workshop, participants learn how the same principles and practices of relationship-based inclusion can serve the needs of individual children, all the way up through classrooms, communities, and even educational policy. They'll explore how individualizing and tailoring programs to the needs of diverse learners can help put the field of teaching and teacher training on a new track for success.

Participants in this workshop will learn:

  1. Basic principles and practices of inclusion;

  2. How inclusion supports individuals, groups, classrooms and schools; and

  3. How inclusion of children with disabilities connects with contemporary issues of diversity, equity, and contemporary goals for high quality, developmentally appropriate practice.
